How To Treat Your Candida

Once you have realized that you are suffering from a Candida overgrowth, you can begin your Candida treatment plan to restore balance to your gut. There are three key elements to successfully beating a Candida overgrowth. These three elements are probiotics, antifungals and a strict anti-Candida diet. Used together, they offer you the best chance of returning your digestive system to perfect health.

Treating a Candida overgrowth is not easy and can take both time and effort. However if you’ve been suffering from Candida-related symptoms for years, the results will certainly be worth it. Here is some more information on the three elements of your treatment plan.

    Probiotics

    Probiotics

Probiotics are perhaps the most important component of any Candida treatment plan, and you can click on the link to the left of this page to see some of the products that we recommend. There are three very good reasons why you should make probiotics an integral part of your own treatment.

Firstly, probiotics slow down the Candida overgrowth by competing with it for resources. Normally your gut would be full of ‘good’ bacteria that consume many of the sugars and nutrients that enter your digestive system. However, when the Candida yeast takes over, it uses all these resources for itself. When you reintroduce large quantities of probiotics into your gut, they ‘crowd out’ the Candida by competing with it for sugars

Secondly, probiotics help to restore the correct level of acidity to your gut. Remember that although your bloodstream should be slightly alkaline, your gut should always be very acidic. This naturally acidic environment protects us from pathogens like Candida. However, when Candida starts to dominate your gut, it excretes alkaline byproducts like ammonia. A course of good probiotics helps to return your gut to the optimal acidity.

Lastly, probiotics build up your immune system. According to Dr. Allan Walker of the Harvard Medical School, "Evidence from clinical research demonstrates that adding 'good' bacteria to the diet promotes a healthy digestive and immune system." By rebuilding your immune system you can increase your body’s natural defenses against Candida. This is important not only to beat your Candida overgrowth, but also to prevent it from recurring in the future. That’s one reason why we recommend staying on probiotics even after your Candida treatment plan is successfully completed.

When you buy probiotics, try to purchase a brand with a high count of 'good bacteria', lots of different strains, and ideally one that is shelf-stable. This last point is important, as probiotics that aren't shelf-stable will quickly deteriorate during shipping if they are not refrigerated. We recomment Healthy Origins 30 billion (60 capsules) and Healthy Origins 30 billion (150 capsules).

    Antifungals

    Antifungals

Probiotics can slow down your Candida overgrowth and prevent it from recurring, but to really kill the Candida yeast you need to take antifungals. Antifungals destroy yeast cells by breaking down their cell walls. There are some antifungal medicines that doctors sometimes prescribe for Candida overgrowth, such as Nystatin, however they often have nasty side effects. Natural antifungals are an excellent alternative.

Candida Clear by NOW Foods is a good quality antifungal that you can use to start your Candida treatment. It contains a number of powerful antifungals like caprylic acid, oil of oregano and olive leaf extract. You can also buy Caprylic Acid (the main antifungal in coconut oil) or Oregano Oil in supplement form too.

For the best results, you should take the antifungals at the same time as your probiotics. You can take several antifungals at the same time, and even rotate them to find which one works best for you.

    Diet

The anti-Candida diet is basically a low-carb diet with a few modifications. Cutting out refined sugars is the first and most important step. That means no more sugary junk food, no more sodas and no more white rice or pasta. In fact we would also recommend cutting your fruit intake down as much as you can too. Eating too much sugar is probably one of the main reasons why you got a Candida overgrowth in the first place.

Healthy food for the Candida Diet

Alcohol is another food that you need to avoid, because it contains sugars that will feed the Candida. Read the nutritional contents of anything you buy in the supermarket – you will be surprised at how many foods contain high levels of sugar. You can give your Candida treatment the best chance of working by sticking to a diet of vegetables and salads, with no refined sugars at all.

For cooking, baking and dressing salads, there are some wonderful coconut products that you can use. These are not just tasty, they have antifungal properties too. You can use Coconut Aminos instead of soy sauce, Coconut Vinegar instead of your regular vinegar, and Organic Coconut Oil to cook with. A great option for baking is Coconut Flour, which makes a delicious coconut bread. You can also make your own Kefir with a Kefir Starter Kit.

Other supplements that can help to beat your Candida

There are other ways that you can help to beat your Candida overgrowth, besides the three elements we’ve listed above. Supporting your immune system, building up your adrenals, and helping your digestive system are all great ways to boost the effectiveness of your Candida treatment.

    Relief from Candida symptoms

Candida releases a huge number of byproducts that play havoc with many of your internal systems. One of the worst is acetaldehyde, which is responsible for your brain fog (among other things). If your liver is overwhelmed then these symptoms can become even worse. There are some excellent supplements that can help. Try Candidate, Detox Drops, NAC With Molybdenum or Milk Thistle Extract.

    Immune system support

Your own immune system is your first line of defense against a Candida overgrowth. Supplements like vitamin C can give it a helping hand. Another supplement named ImmunityPlus can help you to build a strong and healthy immune system.

    Building up your adrenals

Adrenal fatigue is very often found in Candida sufferers. This can actually make your overgrowth worse as your adrenals are a crucial part of your immune system. Supplements like AdrenoBoost are a great way to get your adrenals back into fighting shape.
